Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to introduce the microorganisms that cause disease in the community and hospital, to teach disinfection and sterilization methods, to gain knowledge and skills about protecting the person and the environment from infections.
Course Content: Microorganisms structure and properties, classification of microorganisms, the definition of infections and mechanisms, microorganisms caused by diseases, protection and control ways to gain knowledge and skills about the course.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Explains the mechanism of infection formation and counts the infection chain elements.
2) Distinguish and explain the signs and symptoms of infection.
3) Defines the transmission routes of microorganisms, risks, hospital and laboratory biosecurity levels and applies personal protection methods.
4) Distinguish the methods and agents of sterilization and disinfection and choose the appropriate method.
5) Explains the immune response against microorganisms and counts the elements of the immune system.
6) Classify the infectious diseases, infectious diseases, blood, respiratory, digestive, skin and sexual pathways related to bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal diseases. Explains current treatment methods.

Course Flow Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Introduction to the World of Microorganisms: Introduction to the micro world, its history, microbiological concepts-terminology, branches of microbiology, infection chain elements.
2) Infection formation infection chain elements, signs and symptoms of infection, types of fever seen
3) Sterilization Methods: Learning the concepts of sterilization, disinfection, contamination, decontamination and examining sterilization methods.
4) Introduction to Bacteriology: Prokaryote-eukaryote differentiation. General characteristics of bacteria, morphological classification and study of organelles of microbial organisms. Structural features of Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria. Bacteriology: Gram stain principles, examination of bacterial structures: Capsule, spore, etc. formations of structures. Explaining bacterial growth through bacterial growth graph.
5) Bacterial Metabolism: Classification system according to bacterial respiration mechanisms. Important aerobic and anaerobic bacteria causing disease.
6) Antimicrobial Concept and Bacterial Diseases: Antibiotic action mechanisms and antibiotic types. Transmission routes and bacterial diseases, Diagnosis systems of these diseases.

8) Introduction to virology: General characteristics of viruses, their reproduction and examination of genetic structures of viruses.
9) Classification of Viruses: Diseases and diagnostic systems of DNA and RNA viruses.
10) Introduction to Mycology: General characteristics, classification and important diseases transmitted by fungi.
11) Introduction to Parasitology: General characteristics and classification of parasites.
12) Parasitology: Important parasites and their pathogenic effects.
13) Introduction to Immunology. Antigen-antibody relationship. Examination of prevention and treatment methods of diseases caused by microorganisms.
14) Vaccine Technology, Diagnostic Methods Microbiota and Current Studies: Vaccine types, various diagnostic methods, examination of the effects of natural microflora on health, microbiota treatments, microbiota-cancer relationship.
