Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: Providing basic information regarding the situation of youngsters; the complex and problematic growth phases and offering probable solutions to the occurrings of crisis-situations.
Course Content: The scope of the course is focused on adolescence / puberty, essentially. Etiology of the word “adolescence / puberty”, its auxiliary connotations, related common problems, exceptional severe problems and ways of coping, including parental and institutionalized support. Getting informed about involved topics and keep updating one’s useful knowledge is important.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) He/she can achieve a scientific definition of the concepts of puberty and adolescence.
2) He/she can enumerate / outline common problems of the mentioned developmental phase as concise items.
3) He-she can easily go into elaborated oral explanations regarding any of the listed problems.
4) He-she verifies the significance of an early diagnosis of a certain development obstacle.
5) He-she grasps would-be-measures by parents / guardians / protectors of adolescents, in case of necessities
6) He-she fully appreciates the meaning of healthy communication and display of understanding-and-affectionate consideration.
7) He/she is properly informed about supporting teaching aids including lesson-providing fairy tales, stories, novels and movies dealing with education and training of youngsters.
8) He / she can prove being aware of the importance of peer groups, regarding the social environment of youngsters.

Course Flow Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) The phase of life known as youth is the foundation of one’s future and in this respect it is like a social investment era. Literal meanings of puberty and adolescence; its broad definition and peculiar traits (physical, cognitive, social—interpersonal, emotional).
2) Common problems shared by youngsters. A concise list and necessary elaborative explanations regarding pertaining to Turkish culture and present times (like addiction to the so-called cyber-space).
3) (Anxious) pre-occupation with one’s morphological changes and the consequences involved. Remedial suggestions to alleviate the experienced worries.
4) Parental interest and duty “saturated with” friendly and affectionate manners to help out. Inclusion of the entire family and even certain relatives are recommended, in this context.
5) Importance of communicating well with an adolescent subject as a reasonable and well-informed adult. Providing valuable knowledge, vicarious transfer of lived experiences and interactive advice—counselling sessions, whereby their voice and vote is seriously taken into consideration, as well.
6) Comparisons between boys and girls in terms of severity of the involved turbulence problems and the relative ease with which to tackle them scientifically. (Anorexia, diets, following unrealistic role-models, “opening up” to friends and eagerness to seek help from others etc.)
7) The issue of onanism as a common practice. Coping with acne (pimples) through careful hygiene and psychological means. Efforts to “beat” dependence on cyber-space, a real disaster of our times!
8) Motor and / or vocal tics we may encounter on the way to growing up. Knowledge about Tourette's syndrome (TS).
9) Social environment of the youngsters and encouragement of related scientific discussion and / or suggestions (Roles of peer groups, one’s social class, sub-culture).
10) The immense function and role of formal education: What schooling can achieve which no other socializing agent may replace, family included.
11) Keeping one’s flaring up temper in control somehow. Trying to be meek and compatible by extra efforts, as a sociable being. Handling probable sense of guilt in many aspects of daily life.
12) Avoiding drug dependence, tobacco and alcohol through self-control and a resolute mind-set.
13) The theme of youth in literary works.
14) The theme of youth in now-classic movies.
