Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to teach general information about parasitology and basic concepts, to teach the classification of parasitic species which are of medical importance, life cycles and morphological characteristics, parasitic diseases diagnosis, treatment and prevention of parasitic diseases.
Course Content: This course includes basic concepts of parasitology and the identification of parasitic species, parasitic disease, treatment methods and prevention methods.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Describes the general properties of parasites.
2) Classify the parasites of medical importance, life cycles and describes the morphology.
3) Count the parasites, diagnosis and treatment methods which are dangerous for public health.
4) Applies the diagnostic methods of parasites.
5) Explains laboratory safety in parasitology laboratories.
6) Do the determination of the samples examined under the microscope.

Course Flow Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Introduction to parasitology, theories of abiogenesis and biogenesis, symbiosis, parasitic-host relationships, classification of parasites to host requirements, time spent in the host, classification according to the organ where they are located.
2) Evolution of parasites: Monoxene and Heteroxene parasites. Determination of vector, reservoir, last host intermediate host relationships, naming of parasitic diseases, general clinical documentation and the presence of prevention pathways.
3) Introduction to protozoology, general properties of protozoa, discovery, importance and morphology. Movement and proliferation in protozoa.
4) Plasmodium, Trypanosoma, Entomoeba, Toxoplasma, Leishmania, etc. investigation of parasites and life cycles.
5) Ways of transmission of protozoa, diagnosis, treatment and prevention
6) General properties of helminths, classification, life cycles and forms.
7) Helminth infections: Tenyaz, Cyst Hydratic, Hookworm Infections, Enterobiasis, Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, examination of Fasiola hepatica infections.
8) Midterm exam
9) Helminth diagnostic methods: float-settling, staining, cellophane tape and so on. investigation of methods.
10) Introduction to entomology, general characteristics, classification and distribution.
11) Investigation of insects producing parasitic diseases: Glossina morsitans, Phelebotomus, Aedes albopictus, Musca domestica, Bit, Flea, Tick.
12) Malaria, sleep disease, scabies, Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic fever, Kala-azar, tuberculosis, dysentery, West Nile Virus, Yellow fever, food poisoning, typhoid fever, tuberculosis diseases such as the transmission of pathogens, diseases, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
13) Review of immune responses against parasites, antiparasitic vaccine and drug systems
14) Investigation of macroscopic, microscopic, culture-based, serological and molecular diagnostic methods of parasite samples.Laboratory safety in parasitology laboratories.

1) Medical laboratory techniques apply the basic knowledge and skills on the path to diagnosis from the patient samples, which are deemed necessary by the physicians, by gaining the competence towards the general and applied sciences of basic medicine fields such as microbiology, biochemistry, hematology and immunology for human health. 3 3 3 3 3 3
