Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: To follow the progress of the Ottoman Alphabet and Classical art of writing in the process of history, identify distinctive features, and evaluate prominent representatives and selected literary texts.
Course Content: Definition of Ottoman paleography, writing styles according to document types, various handwriting examples, presentation of the most frequently used writing types and review and translation through texts.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) The students understand theoretical knowledge about Turkish Calligraphy
2) The students identify nesih, rika, and talik styles in the original texts
3) The students know writing characteristics of the Classical Turkish Literature
4) The students transcribe selected original texts which are not in the anthologies and analyze them

6) Talik, its areas of usage, and analysis of its features using samples
7) Analysis of Nesih samples through literary texts
8) Midterm exam
9) Transcribing texts written in Nesih style into the Latin alphabet
10) Analysis of Rika samples through literary texts
11) Transcribing texts written in Rika style into the Latin alphabet
12) Analysis of Talik samples through literary texts
13) Transcribing texts written in Talik style into the Latin alphabet
14) Analysis and transcription of various texts written in Nesih, Rika, and Talik styles
15) Final Exam

2) Have knowledge of examining the properties of Turkish within the framework of universal linguistics rules.
3) Establishes the relationship between language and literature, active writing and interpretation activities.
4) Uses computer software, and information and communication technologies at least at the European Computer Driving License Basic Level.
5) Uses Turkish in terms of intonation and emphasis aesthetically; writes accurate, comprehensible, effective articles in terms of spelling and punctuation.
6) Knows and uses the current information and resources in the field.
7) Understands the historical and modern Turkish texts written with different alphabets, transmits them to modern Turkish.
