Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to introduce the basic concepts of geriatrics; the physiological, psychological, and psychosocial changes observed in older adults; the factors affecting elderly health; and ethical, political, and contemporary approaches to elderly care, thereby enabling students to evaluate aging from a holistic perspective.
Course Content: This course covers an overview of geriatrics; the historical and cultural dimensions of geriatrics; physiological and psychological changes observed in geriatric individuals; factors affecting health in old age; and common physiological and psychosocial health problems in older adults. In addition, topics such as gerontechnology applications, aging and ethics, elderly policies in Türkiye and worldwide, care services provided to older adults in Türkiye, approaches to healthy, successful, and active aging, as well as aging and death are addressed.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Explains the concept of old age, the aging process, and the fundamental concepts related to aging.
2) Analyzes comparatively the demographic characteristics of the elderly population in Türkiye and worldwide.
3) Identifies and explains the physiological and psychological changes observed in old age and the health problems associated with these changes.
4) Evaluates ethical principles in elderly care within the framework of patient rights and professional responsibilities.
5) Explains and applies holistic principles related to medication use, nutrition, hydration, and creating a safe environment for older adults.
6) Interprets and relates the concepts of healthy, successful, and active aging to elderly policies and end-of-life care processes.
