| Course Objectives: | The aim of this course is to gain basic knowledge and skills to ensure patient safety in surgical processes. It is aimed that students learn the principles of patient safety, identify risk factors and apply safety precautions in clinical practice. In addition, topics such as preventing medication errors, blood transfusion processes, prevention of surgical errors, infection control and medical device safety, which are critical for patient safety, will be emphasised. Students will be able to analyse the factors that threaten patient safety and develop preventive approaches necessary for safe health care delivery. |
| Course Content: | The scope of the course, the concept and objectives of patient safety are discussed. Patient authentication, preventing medication errors, transfusion safety and prevention of falls are discussed. The effect of communication on patient safety and the importance of teamwork are emphasised. Prevention of surgical errors, sterilisation, infection control precautions and prevention of foreign body forgetting are examined. Protection from electrical and chemical burns, prevention of pressure injuries and specimen safety are evaluated. Medical device and equipment safety, root cause analysis, error management and quality improvement processes are discussed. Evidence-based approaches are discussed by examining current research on patient safety in the operating theatre. |
