Course Objectives:

A. Armamentarium for Basic Oral Surgery
1. List the names and numbers of commonly used extraction forceps and discuss the mechanical principles involved in the removal of teeth.
2. Describe the basic features of extraction forceps and discuss how these features are used in selecting specific forceps for specific teeth.
3. List the names and numbers of commonly used dental elevators and describe their features. Discuss the mechanical principles involved in their uses.
4. List the names and numbers of other dental instruments used in oral surgery and discuss their uses.
5. Discuss the use of general surgery instruments in oral surgery.
B1. Principles of Surgery
1. List the elements usually included in the development of a surgical diagnosis.
2. Discuss the principles of tissue handling and mucoperiosteal flap design.
3. Describe the elements employed in hemostasis, how it pertains to oral surgical procedures, and the means of promoting hemostasis in wounds in the oral cavity.
4. Describe the various methods of wound closure, kinds of suture materials and instruments available, and basic suturing techniques employed in oral surgery.
5. Discuss the concept of edema control and its significance in oral surgery. Describe the techniques used in controlling edema about the mouth.
B2. Wound Repair
1. Describe the several elements in the physical and chemical causes of tissue damage. Describe epithelialization and its particular significance in the healing of wounds of skin and mucous membrane.
2. List the stages of wound healing and discuss the mechanism and significance of each.
3. List the factors that impair wound healing.
4. Describe the healing of extraction sockets and bone healing generally.
C. Evaluation of Health Status
1. Reproduce the standard format for recording the results of history and physical examinations.
2. Discuss the management of oral surgery patients with compromising medical conditions.
3. Discuss the management of pregnant and postpartum patients.
D. Prevention and Management of Medical Emergencies
1. Describe the impact of a prevention philosophy on the management of emergencies.
2. Discuss the creation of a prevention and treatment plan for a dental office for medical emergencies, and describe the involvement in that plan of the professional and auxiliary staff.
3. Describe the management of a patient with a hypersensitivity reaction.
4. Describe the management of a patient exhibiting chest discomfort and discuss the differential diagnosis of acute onset chest pain.
5. Discuss the management of patients with respiratory difficulty; describe the management of patients with asthma, hyperventilation syndrome, COPD, and foreign body aspiration.
6. Describe the management of patients exhibiting altered consciousness in the dental setting.

E. Principles of Uncomplicated Exodontia
1. List the factors which influence the degree of difficulty in the removal of erupted teeth. Describe the clinical and radiographic evaluation of each factor.
