Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course will reveal the design processes and inner-workings of video game spaces, in order to understand how such digital environments could be conceptualized, designed and produced. Through examining various examples and working on their personal, semester-long projects, students will learn how to design these visuo-spatial game spaces themselves.
Course Content: This course aims to investigate video games as visuo-spatial art forms. This course breaks down the spatial structures and digital landscapes of video game worlds by using case studies, various examples and through the personal gameplay experiences of the students.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) conceptually design and digitally build a video game level
2) a video game level that will work with predetermined gameplay mechanics
3) design a video game level as a simple narrative tool
4) design a video game level that provide an enjoyable gaming experience

2) Introduction to game worlds and game art. Early examples of level design and design tools. Class discussion. Pick your game type and start thinking about gameplay mechanics.

4) Visual cues, learned behaviors and social reflexes. Examples of visual elements in service of gameplay. Class discussion. Project work.

1) Being able to write creatively, imagine, and produce original and inspired fictional scenarios, places, and universes. Being able to produce 2D and 3D visual designs and impressive auditory compositions. Being able to plan all these artistic practices around certain goals and with a focus on design. Being able to design the videogame design process itself.
2) Being able to think and produce creative content based on mathematical data. Being able to parametrically design. Being able to quantify art and design practices, such as creative writing, graphical, illustrative, spatial, and character design. Being able to ideate qualitatively and subjectively through quantitative and objective approaches.
3) Being able to work on projects by incorporating various fields of expertise and the content that originates from these fields.
