Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: • To introduce the principles of visual communication: focus on documentaries and news
• To develop an understanding of television, its newsroom, organisational structure and reporting process
• To enable the process of writing news scripts and producing for television
•To introduce students to visual storytelling with a video camera.
Course Content: Students who successfully complete this course;
can carry out thorough research into news and programme ideas, including identifying: suitable interviewees and locations; relevant background and illustrative footage and locations; visual materials, archive picture and sound footage; articles and features.

1) Students can carry out thorough research into news and programme ideas, including identifying: suitable interviewees and locations; relevant background and illustrative footage and locations; visual materials, archive picture and sound footage; articles and features.
2) Students can develop the knowledge that will allow them to situate news events in their larger context, to ask more informed questions, and to evaluate competing claims made by sources.
3) Also imparts a deeper understanding of journalism and the forms it takes, and the focus is on content as much as on skills.
