Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: Developing alternative intellectual positions on topics such as materiality and materials; developing thinking and experimentation on the potentials of materials in the design process. Developing mental pathways on past, current, and future material regimes. Generating thoughts on technology, representation, design, and materiality.
Course Content: The course 'Contemporary Material Theories' aims to question and open up for discussion the production methods of the material world, changing materiality regimes throughout history, and changing paradigms regarding the approach to materiality within the context of architectural theory. The goal is to develop a theoretical and practical (or non-practical) awareness and sensitivity towards materials. In this context, alternative methods such as research and gamification through design will be used to experiment with different representation forms and productions regarding contemporary materials, their possibilities and futures, and their roles in producing space. Therefore, active participation and interest from students are expected.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) To develop sensitivity to the possibilities of materiality in the production of space
2) To gain knowledge about the spatial expression potentials of materials in the production of space
3) To question existing materials, future materials, space, structure, and architectural concepts
4) To question the ideological, practical, social, and ecological foundations of contemporary building materials
5) To develop various ideas and design research on the use of alternative materials in alternative space design
