Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives:

The management of pain in dentistry encompasses a number of procedural issues, including the delivery of anesthetic and the management of postprocedural pain, as well as pain diagnosis, management strategies for orofacial conditions that cause pain in the face and head, and the management of pain in special populations. Given the extensive nature of the topic, this lesson aims to make understand pain definitions and mechanisms, acute versus chronic pain, and to focus on management strategies related to anesthetic delivery and the control of pain following dental procedures.

Course Content:

Definition of pain
Pain transmission pathways and orofacial pain pathways
Dental conditions that cause pain in dentistry
Conditions causing orofacial pain and management strategies
Anesthesia applications in pain control in dentistry
Use of analgesic drugs in pain control in dentistry and postoperative pain control
Relationship between pain and stress

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Learning to recognize, define and understand the mechanism of pain in oral and maxillofacial area
2) Learning all the related causes of orofacial pain
3) Learning to create and apply the appropriate treatment strategies according to the type of orofacial pain to control it successfully
4) Learning the pharmacologic agents which used to control orofacial pain
5) Learning how to select and use the appropriate pharmacologic agents to control orofacial pain
6) Learning how to use anesthetic applications to control orofacial pain and discomfort
7) Understanding the relationship between anxiety and orofacial pain
