Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: By understanding theories of nationalism, the aim is for students to examine, in a qualitative and critical manner, the concepts that are present in daily conversations and discussions.
The study of examples of nationalism that directly influence political formations and practices in the international and regional contexts; in this respect, it aims to provide practical application of the subject by addressing nationalism in Europe (such as Italy and Germany), as well as in the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, and Arab states, both during lectures and through assignments.
Course Content: This course explains the meaning, content, and functions of nationalism in light of major theories of nationalism. It will incorporate the ideas of Anthony Smith, Ernest Gellner, Anthony Giddens, Benedict Anderson, and other esteemed scholars.
Furthermore, relevant terminology will be explored in relation to socio-political and cultural life issues (gender, ethnic communities, minorities, etc.). Focusing on various nationalist movements in global, national, and regional contexts through case studies, the course will offer assessments of issues such as society and state relations, multiculturalism, religion, and ideology.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) In the field of Political Science and International Relations, the ability to understand and interpret the concept of Nationalism within its historical context.
2) Understanding the relationships between the nation-state, religion, ideology, society, and the individual.
3) Meeting with the understanding of multiculturalism
4) The ability to distinguish nationalism in practice regarding religion/language/culture, minorities, and gender issues.
