Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: 1. To explain the political developments during the Ottoman period with the cause and effect relationship;
2. To understand the reform efforts during the Ottoman period;
3. To realise the transition process from absolutism to constitutionalism;
4. To evaluate the First World War and the War of Independence politically.
Course Content: Society and state in the Ottoman Empire; Foreign policy in the Ottoman Empire; reform efforts; Nizam-ı Cedid; Sened-i İttifak; The reign of Mahmud II; Edict of 1839 (Tanzimat), Edict of 1856 (Islahat), Kanun-i Esasi; Constitutionalism; the Committee of Union and Progress, World War I and the War of Independence.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Students who successfully complete this course analyze the basic dynamics, processes and historical development of Turkish political life.
2) they will be able to use the basic concepts of political science to evaluate the events in Turkish political life.
3) they achieve the competence to evaluate essential developments in Turkish political life.
4) they analyze modernization movements in the Ottoman Empire.
5) they attain the ability to interpret the transition process from Empire to Republic.
