Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to deal with the issues that shaped Turkish politics in the post-1980 period. In order to understand the changing nature of Turkish politics, special attention will be paid to the consolidation of democracy, civil society, the rise of Islam, nationalism, identity politics and socioeconomic change.
Course Content: Fourteen basic problems have been identified for the course. These issues will be covered in 14 separate conference formats.
The military-politics relationship, Religion and politics, the struggle for hegemony in Turkish politics, social movements and politics, ethnic and minority problems, the European Union and social integration debates, class debates in Turkey, conservatism and nationalism will be discussed in their historical development.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Defines the historical background of current problems in Turkey.
2) Defines the factors between problems and economic relations and social changes.
3) Defines the possible effects of international transformations and developments on Turkish politics.
4) It defines the chronic problems that have come to the fore in every period starting from the Ottoman Empire.
5) Has knowledge about historical solution methods of problems. In the face of possible crises and problems, he can offer different solutions by analyzing the problems and methods that have been resolved.

Course Flow Plan

1) Making the general introduction of the course, sharing the selected topics and the evaluation criteria related to the topics, the method to be followed. Modernization and modernization debates in Turkey; Contemporary and Westernization debates; Fourteen key problems were identified for the course It will be suggested to come to the class by reading the given sources
2) The distinctions made within the framework of conservatism and the demands for change and its effect in setting the agenda in Turkish politics Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
3) Discussions on the foundations of the national state and the founding philosophy of the state; Debates on Nationalism and Ummah in Turkey Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
4) The effects of constitutional developments and constitutional debates on Turkish political life in the Ottoman Empire and the Republican period. Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
5) The impact of coups and coup attempts on the "democratic" process in Turkish Political Life in military coups and civil society discussions Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
6) Since the Lausanne Peace Talks, Minority Debates in Turkey and its effects on Turkish political life Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
7) Discussions on the Turkish Revolution and the development and formation of the Bourgeoisie in Turkey and the reflection of these debates on the Turkish political tradition Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
8) The effect of these discussions on the process of identity debates and citizenship debates in Turkey; The effects of ethnic problems and debates on political traditions and transformations. Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
9) Secularism and secularism debates on the democratization process in Turkey. Examining the change in the public sphere, Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
10) Transformation of "executive" power in Turkish Political Life, Presidential Government System Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
11) The Cyprus Problem and its reflection on Turkish political life 13. Week and 14. Week topics will be discussed separately outside of class hours if requested. Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
12) The influence of pressure groups in setting the agenda in Turkish politics; The influence of non-governmental organizations, press, ruling and opposition parties. Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
13) Debates on membership to the European Union and the reflection of the process in Turkish political life. Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
14) Depending on the transformation of the International System, the shaping of current problems in Turkish Politics Participation in the lesson will be ensured by reading on the subject of the week.
