Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: General course objectives are as follows:
- to increase vocabulary and enhance use, knowledge, and understanding of the English language;
- to stimulate an appreciation for the English language, including how it developed, how new words enter the language, and how it continues to be dynamic;
- to demonstrate the importance of a broad-based vocabulary for effective oral and written communication;
- to generate opportunities for practical application of concepts through various classroom activities.
Course Content: Critical analysis of English words with Latin and Greek roots. Examination of words, sentences and literary terms and derivatives from classical mythology. English words used in Turkish and etymology of English and Turkish place names, international terms, idioms, slogans.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) To be able to examine Latin variants of modern English words,
2) To be able to analyze the connotations, expressions and various histories of words,
3) To examine the words, roots, and structures of words,
4) To have knowledge about Greek, Anglo-Saxon, Germanic language and other language origins,
5) To be able to distinguish and use the words homophonic, syN/Aym words effectively in published texts.

3) He / She takes ethical and practical training from beginning to advanced levels to develop consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills in various fields such as health, media and law etc. Thanks to this training, he / she practices his/her profession in accordance with the standards of conference interpreting in various legal, health and media-communication fields nationally and internationally.
3) He / She acquires the ability to understand multicultural approaches in the field of translation and interpretation and reflects the efficient bilingual and bi-cultural practices on his/her works.
4) He / She knows and applies professional ethics, professional standards and practices in the field of translation and interpretation.
5) He / She applies basic research methods and theories in social sciences.
