Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course is designed to explain the communication management tools and techniques applied to the improvement and development of individual and public health in health communication, conflict management in order to increase the efficiency of the services provided in health institutions, and the presentation of products and services produced in health institutions to the public.
Course Content: Health communication will be discussed in three main dimensions in this course.
1. It is the improvement and development of public health. Issues related to this dimension; Definition, Purpose, Scope, Characteristics of Communication, Elements of the Communication Process, Social Origins of Health and Disease Concepts and Their Effects on Health Communication, Perception and Dimensions of Health Communication on the basis of countries, Application Examples and International Meetings and Decisions that Affect the Development of Health Communication, Individuals' Attitudes and Behaviors It is the Communication Models that direct.
2. The interpersonal dimension to increase the efficiency of communication between healthcare professionals and patients. Issues related to this dimension; Communication Between Patients, Physicians, Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Managers, Difficulties in Health Communication, Factors Affecting the Effectiveness of Health Communication and the Concept of Service Failure in Health
3. Social marketing dimension in order to present products and services produced in health institutions to health consumers. Subjects related to this dimension: Social Marketing in Health Institutions, Health Journalism, Health Literacy, Media Advocacy Approach Brand and Image Management in Health Institutions, Corporate Reputation Management in Health Institutions, Advertising Studies in Health Communications and Advertising Restrictions in Health Institutions

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Interpret the elements and basic concepts of health communication.
2) Understands the domain and importance of health communication in solving health problems.
3) Discusses health communication models based on communication theories.
4) Evaluates communication barriers between professional professionals and patients / patient relatives.
5) Discusses the concept of social marketing, which is a special field in the protection of public health.
6) Interprets the concepts of health journalism in the media and advocacy in terms of health communication.
7) Can independently conduct an advanced study in his field.

Course Flow Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) The general definition, purpose, scope, characteristics of communication and its close relationship with the concept of health communication will be explained. The dynamics that constitute the social origins of the concepts of health and disease will be discussed.
2) National and international meetings, decisions and social developments that are effective in the development of the understanding of health communication will be discussed. It will focus on the new medical model that has emerged in the historical process, which affects the development of the understanding of health communication, the increase in consumption, the discrimination in health services, the emergence of preventive treatment, the acceptance of marketing in health services.
3) An introduction to the 3 dimensions of health communication, delivery of health services and health promotion will be introduced, and application examples from the world and Turkey will be presented.
4) The concept of the target audience in health communication and the communication models that direct the attitudes and behaviors of the target audience will be explained.
5) The interpersonal dimension of health communication will be explained and in this context, communication and conflict management between physicians, health workers, health managers and patients in health institutions will be explained.
6) The difficulties in health communication and the concept of service failure in health will be explained.
7) The concepts of health in the media, health journalism and health literacy, and the role and importance of advocacy in the media in health communication will be explained.
8) Midterm
9) The concept of social marketing, which is in the 3rd dimension of Health Communication, will be discussed through the examples of social marketing campaigns created by health institutions for this purpose. Campaigns prepared by the state in health communication will be examined and public health information will be defined.
10) The Health Communication Campaign process will continue. The public relations mix elements that make up the campaign preparation process in health communication and their role in health communication will be explained.
