Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to familiarize the graduate-students with basic topics and concepts of Organizational Sociology, i.e. behavior patterns of the crew (staff) displayed in given work settings and circumstances.
Course Content: This course covers basic concepts and topics related to organizations, their historical roots and scholarly investigations ever since the beginning of the twentieth century, communication styles and improvements, studies on group dynamics, significance of on-the-job training, refined management techniques and leadership qualifications, handling stress and conflict and resistance to change, hindering counter-productive attitudes and actions.

1) Perceive the working mechanism of a given establishment under scrutiny or observation
2) Evaluate the work-place in terms of good mannerism principles applied
3) Pick out and define critical decisions taken by the top management
4) Freely and fluently employ the related key words (professional jargon)
5) Make citations to the involved scientific literature and proper names of the doyens

Course Flow Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) A general glance at organizational sociology; its definition; a list of related “cousin” disciplines.
2) What is work? why do people work after all?
3) Work organizations and the concept of bureaucracy (M. Weber) as an early model; the first investigations of organizations in the scientific sense: scientific management (USA, F.W. Taylor), classical organization (France, H. Fayol).
4) A serendipitious discovery through Hawthorne studies by Elton Mayo et al. (early 1930s); the development of the theory of human relations.
5) Modern understanding regarding management; international examples in management and mutual emulations (japan-origined American manager William Ouchi’s Z-Theory model).
6) Healthy communication in work place; elements of the process of communication.
7) The locus of the individual within the establishment; conformism, solidarity, cohesiveness, groups’ characters, institutional culture and climate.
8) Conflict in a work setting and resulting solutions; tactful handling of stress and making it into a productive means.
9) The issue of supervising over the employees and the concept of leadership; types of leadership; traits of leaders.
10) Recruitment of the personnel (via tests) & the techniques of appraisal of the staff at hand.
11) On-the-job training; sensitivity training example and the “Johari” window.
12) Decision-making processes as well as methods in an organization (Delphi technique, groupthink, group polarization, brain-storming, drift towards satisficing); the topic of risk as a potentiality regarding the future, in any case (Peter Drucker’s analysis).
13) Counter-productive behavior patterns; their detrimental effects & ways to cope with them as a successful leader / manager.
14) Good Manners (savoir-vivre / gute Manieren / savoire-vivre) in work setting and their contribution to a smooth, problemless trend.
