Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The students who succeeded in this course;
•Will be able to have knowledge about basic principles of public health; history, philosophy of public health and its subconcepts such as environmental health, child health, elderly health, occupational diseases.
•Will be able to have knowledge about how to planning, management organization of home care, disaster management, infectious disease control in health management in public health.
Course Content: Public health and its history; basic philosophy, scope and principles of public health branch; demography and health, their data sources; environmental health, wastes, behavioral factors affecting health; nutrition, early diagnosis, control of excessive fertility, drug protection, personal hygiene and health education; children's health; elderly health and chronic diseases in elderly; mental health and social health; occupational health and safety; occupational diseases; improving health care delivery in terms of public health, the basic terms of adult health education; evaluation of health planning, health management and health organization in terms of public health; women's health, reproductive health, family planning and their counseling services; childhood and its diseases, immunization, growth development, infectious diseases and their control, public health perspective on adolescent health; old age, non-communicable diseases and their control; home care services; healthcare programs (e.g. oral and dental health, mental health) and health management; health care management in disasters (before, during and after); medicine and society, rational drug use; improvement of healthcare services in developed countries and Turkey ; the development of public health in Turkey: yesterday and today.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Explain the concept of public health and its history.
2) Evaluates public health data sources and epidemiological measures
3) Interprets the factors affecting public health.
4) Makes comments about mother-child health, family planning, elderly health, management of chronic diseases.
5) Makes policy recommendations on public health.
6) Explains the management of health services in disasters.
7) Compares public health policies in Turkey and developed countries.
