Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The course aims to introduce the students various techniques, methods and approaches in developing an independent academic research based on a topic of interest. It intends to help them gain skills and methods to conduct research and communicate their findings and ideas through writing and speaking. It also aims to provide them with an understanding of how research and critical thinking can support their creative work in the field of media.
Course Content: This course is designed to guide the students through the process of developing a research and writing project in the field of film and media studies. It covers various phases of research, the formulation of a research question, determining primary and secondary resources, how to find and use library and online resources, developing a critical framework of analysis, writing with appropriate citation and referencing techniques, and delivering ideas with a clear argument and structure.

The course includes a series of lectures, workshops, individual meetings with students, and student presentations. Each lecture will introduce a different aspect of research and academic writing, which will guide the students through the process of writing a research essay till the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Students gain a basic understanding of developing, planning, structuring and writing phases of a research project.
2) Students can formulate a research question.
3) Students can investigate a research question in relation to existing literature and media practice.
4) Students gain research skills to find, identify and interpret different forms of resources, using library databases and online resources effectively.
5) Students gain academic writing skills to deliver ideas and research findings with appropriate referencing and citation techniques, correct grammar and spelling.
