Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: To enable the students to situate screenwriting in the process of film-making; analyse a film in terms of its narrative communication; write a story in standard screenplay format; prepare for pitching their work.
Course Content: Following Syd Field’s approach to screenwriting and screenplay analysis this course will offer insight into topics such as problem, dramatic need, conflict, motivation, stake, etc. It will then introduce the most frequently used plots. Employing a comparative approach to feature films and short films, their formal and conceptual differences will be examined The students will study selected screenplays and discuss films in terms of their narrative communication.They will produce adaptations from news or literary works and at the end of the semester submit screenplays as term project.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Upon successful completion of this course, the students will have a command of cinematic narrative communication;
2) They will be able to format a standard screenplay.
3) They will be able to compose a scene.
4) They will be able to structure the three acts in screenplay.
5) They will have a good command of three act structure.
6) They will be able to research for the specific world and atmosphere of diegesis.
