Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: In this course detailed knowledge about oncological diseases will be given to the radiotherapy technology student and the student will be enabled to approach cancer patients appropriately; to be aware of the patients' problems due to disease and treatment that can be encountered during and after radiotherapy; to observe and detect these problems; to direct the patients accordingly for the solving of the problems; to communicate and cooperate with the radiation oncologists, radiotherapy physicists, and radiotherapy technologists for the compensation of the patients' needs and for achieving high quality in their treatment.
Course Content: This course includes communication with patients and their relatives who are diagnosed with cancer, management of symptoms of nausea, vomiting, infections, nutritional disorders, oral and dental health problems, pain and fatigue experienced by cancer patients; sexual life, pregnancy and infertility problems; psychological changes in this period and ethical dilemmas related to their management and cancer patients.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Communicate effectively with oncology patients and their relatives.
2) Describe the side effects of oncology patients due to radiotherapy.
3) List the symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, pain, tooth, infection, which may be experienced by oncology patients.
4) Defines the frequent psychiatric symptoms and management in oncology patients.
5) Explains the experiences of oncology patients on sexual problems, pregnancy and fertility.
6) List the ethical dilemmas in the field of oncology.
