Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: Familiarizing students with the theories and dynamic linkages among markets, states and institutions, and civil society in the regional and global context. The course covers major theories, concepts and issues of IPE including international institutions, international trade, international finance, international development, and consequences and controversies of globalization.
Course Content: Economic development process and alternative development strategies; inward-oriented and outward-oriented development policies, exports, employment and effects on growth; critical analysis of trade liberalization in some developing countries; Turkey's trade liberalization process and growth performance from an international perspective; import-substitute policies in the 70's, liberalization in foreign trade and foreign exchange policies, reform in the agricultural sector and public economic sector; the role of the growth potential and foreign trade policies of the Turkish Economy in the framework of the European Union.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Learns the main theoretical perspectives of International Political Economy (IPE),
2) Understands the interaction between the economy and politics
3) Explains the effects of globalization/anti- globalization on international business,
4) Understands the dynamics and evolution of international trade and development
