Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course; To train nurses who can consider individuals holistically by evaluating the bio-psychosocial factors affecting the development of mental health, and who can use the concepts specific to mental health and psychiatric nursing and the nursing process in the protection and development of mental health and the treatment and improvement of mental health.
Course Content: This course focuses on the student's understanding of the psychopathological process, signs and symptoms of mental illnesses, current treatment approaches, the functions and roles of the psychiatric nurse in protecting-maintaining and developing mental health, and gaining the ability to systematically address the individual with a mental illness and their family with a biopsychosocial approach, and to gain the ability to practice psychiatric nursing.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Explains the concept of mental health and mental illness and the factors that cause mental illness, the philosophy of psychiatric nursing, its role and functions in primary, secondary and tertiary protection.
2) Explains the risk factors, psychopathological process, signs and symptoms, and treatment and nursing interventions of mental illnesses that are common in the community.
3) Discusses the effects of mental illnesses on the individual, family and society.
4) Explains the role of the nurse in the psychiatric treatment setting.
5) Evaluates the individual, diagnoses their needs and problems, plans, implements and evaluates their care by using a systematic approach in the care of individuals with mental disorders.
6) Uses observation, interview skills, therapeutic communication principles and techniques, and teaching skills in dealing with individuals and groups with mental health problems.
7) Explains special treatment methods for individuals with mental disorders and nursing approaches for these treatments (ECT, group therapies, etc.).
