Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: Clinical laboratory plays an integrated role in the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and long-term management of disease. Proper selection and interpretation of laboratory tests is critical for quality of patient care. In the last few decades, there has been an information explosion in the field of laboratory medicine, making it difficult for health care professionals to remain fluent in all aspects of laboratory testing. It has been said that 80% of all medical decisions encompass clinical laboratory data in the decision process.
Course Content: This course covers basic clinical biochemistry topics including preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical phases of laboratory testing process, analysis of blood cells, chemical analysis of blood plasma contents, coagulation, hormones, viral and tumor markers, therapeutic drug monitoring, urinalysis, rational interpretation and evaluation of laboratory results.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) The students: Will acquire a fundamental understanding of the basics of clinical biochemistry.
2) Will understand the different phases of laboratory testing process.
3) Will be able to consider different phases of laboratory testing process when interpreting laboratory tests.
4) Will assess clinical biochemical data for diagnosis, screening and treatment of various diseases.
5) Will gain knowledge about the relationship between biochemistry and diseases, how to use this knowledge in patient-centered pharmaceutical applications.
6) Will have a deep basic theoretical knowledge that is supported by practical studies in laboratory in covered topics.
7) Will learn how to interpret laboratory results.
8) Will gain experience in skills such as communication (written and verbal) and group-work.
