Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Extended Reality (XR) technologies, including Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR). Through a collaboration with XR Turkey, students will explore both theoretical frameworks and practical industry applications. By the end of the course, students are expected to critically evaluate XR environments, understand their societal implications, and develop the skills necessary to conceptualize and produce their own XR projects.
Course Content: This course offers a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations and practical applications of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies. Students will explore the historical evolution of XR, its technical components, narrative structures, and user experience design principles. The course also examines how XR is applied across diverse domains such as education, healthcare, architecture, and cultural production. Through a partnership with XR Turkey, students will engage with industry experts and participate in hands-on workshops. By the end of the semester, students are expected to develop and present a technically and creatively strong XR project.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) The student will be able to explain the basic concepts and historical development of XR technologies.
2) The student will be able to analyze XR applications and evaluate their use across various fields.

Course Flow Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Introduction to XR: Concepts and Scope Reflect on any prior encounters with XR technologies. Where have you seen them? What kind of impression did they leave on you?
2) History and Evolution of XR Technologies Research the evolution of digital technologies. Try to identify earlier inventions that paved the way for XR.
3) Augmented Reality (AR): Core Technologies and Use Cases Explore an AR app on your phone or tablet. What worked well? What could be improved?
4) Virtual Reality (VR): Hardware, Software, and Experience Design If you’ve used a VR headset before, reflect on the experience. If not, consider your assumptions and expectations about VR.
5) Mixed Reality (MR) and the Spectrum of Extended Reality Think about how the line between reality and simulation is getting blurred. How does XR contribute to this shift?
6) XR ve Hikâye Anlatımı: Anlatı Yapıları ve Etkileşim Recall a digital story you enjoyed. How could it be enhanced if told through XR?
7) Designing with XR: Experiential and User-Centered Design Think of a frustrating digital experience. How could it have been more user-centered?
8) Midterm Summarize the key concepts from previous weeks in your own words. Note the main ideas that connect them.
9) XR Turkey Guest Session: Industry Applications and Entrepreneurship If you were to launch an XR startup, which industry would you target? Why?
10) XR in Education: Redesigning Learning Environments Reflect on the limitations of traditional education methods. How might XR help overcome them?
11) XR Applications in Healthcare and Architecture Design a scenario where XR could improve healthcare or architecture outcomes.
12) Ethics, Privacy, and Social Implications of XR Consider a situation where XR could pose an ethical risk. How would you mitigate it?
13) Final Project Preparation and Feedback Draft your project idea briefly. Who is it for, what is the goal, and on which platform will it be developed?
14) Final Project Presentations Before your presentation, try to express your core message in a single sentence.
