Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course focuses on film production with an emphasis on short films. The course is designed to:
1- Introduce students to the basic characteristics of the short film format.
2- Demonstrate the relationship between the screenplay and the style in film.
3- Provide information about all stages of film production.
4- Introduce independent film production methods.
Course Content: This course is an introduction to short film. Students will learn about the characteristics of the short film, basic film grammar, film styles and all of the stages of short film production. Though main course materials will be uploaded to Blackboard system, students are advised to take their own notes during the lectures.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Narrative Structure Mastery: Students will demonstrate a deep understanding of various narrative structures used in short films, including linear, non-linear, and experimental formats.
2) Stylistic Analysis: Students will critically analyze different stylistic approaches in short films, recognizing how elements such as cinematography, editing, sound design, and mise-en-scène contribute to the overall narrative and emotional impact.

2) Preproduction: The Idea, The Basics of Dramatic Writing, Writing for Short Film Idea sources, three act structure, basic dramatic structure elements
3) Preproduction: The Screenplay Screenwriting stages, logline, logline writing excercise, subject summary, synopsis, treatment
4) Preproduction: The Screenplay Screenplay form, screenwriting rules, screenplay examples
5) Preproduction: Planning (script breakdown, storyboards), Scheduling, Budgeting, Funds, Independent Filmmaking Transition from script to screen, shooting schedule, storyboards, scheduling, budgeting, funding, application processes, independent film production methods.
7) Preproduction: Location Scouting, Casting, Audition The importance of location in film, location scouting methods, casting and selection methods
8) Preproduction: Sound, Lighting, Camera, Special Effects, Acting tests Testing the main elements of the film before shooting, preparing for shooting
9) Basic Film Grammar and Shooting Methods Shot Scales, Continuity, Directional Continuity, Master Scene, Triple-Take, Cutting
10) Film Style (mise-en-scene, editing, cinematography, sound) Subject and style, realism, formalism, visual and audial expression
11) Production: Shooting, Studio vs. Location, VFX Prod., Virtual Prod. The shooting process, differences between studio and on-location shoots, chroma key, LED walls.
12) Postproduction: Editing (Continuity, Montage, Discontinuity) Editing processes, basic workflow, editing approaches
