Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to emphasize the importance of oral and dental health in the aging process and to protect the general health of the elderly and increase their quality of life by teaching preventive strategies to students.
Course Content: This course includes Introduction and basic concepts, Oral and dental anatomy and morphology, Tooth decay, Dental plaque, Gum diseases, Oral hygiene and prophylaxis, Changes in the oral tissues in the elderly, Effects of aging on oral health, Diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases in elderly individuals. It includes topics such as prosthesis options in elderly patients, the relationship of systemic diseases with oral health, the relationship of drugs with oral health, and effective communication with elderly individuals.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) To be able to define the concept of geriatrics and its relationship with oral and dental health.
2) To have knowledge about oral and dental anatomy and morphology
3) To be able to describe the process of dental caries formation.
4) To be able to define dental plaque and explain its relationship with gum diseases.
5) To have knowledge about oral hygiene and prophylaxis methods.
6) To explain the intraoral changes that occur with aging.
7) To summarize the oral and dental health treatment options applied to elderly patients.
8) To explain the relationship between systemic diseases and medications and oral and dental health.
9) To be able to communicate effectively with elderly individuals.
