Course Objectives: | To be able to recognize the usage requirements of the optical system in communication and to understand the principles of optical communication. To be able to recognize fiber optic cable properties and types and to understand the parameters affecting optical signal transmission in fiber optic cable. Ability to recognize materials used in optical transmission. |
Course Content: | Fiber optic communication principles. Fiber optic cable specifications. Transmission characteristics of fiber optics. Entry angle and numerical aperture of fiber optic cable. Calculation of minimum power requirement and optical power budget requirement for fiber optic system. Technical characteristics of LED and LASER as light sources. Features and types of light sensors. CCITT's fiber optic cable core/sheath standards. Explanation of fiber optic transmission system. Fiber optic splicing technique. Interconnect cable (pig-tail), connectors and optical attenuators used in fiber optics. Optical filters, combiners, splitters and doublers. Mux, demux and converters |

1) Ability to understand the principles of optical communication. 2) To be able to recognize the advantages and usage areas of communication with Optical Fibers. 3) To be able to recognize the properties and types of fiber optic cables as light carriers. 4) To understand the parameters affecting optical signal transmission in fiber optic cable. 5) To be able to recognize the materials used in fiber optic transmission and their basic properties. |
