Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course thus invites students to explore key elements of media systems and locate media in a larger political context by focusing on enduring questions about the relationship between media and politics: What influences do media have on our society? How are these influences manifested in human communication? In what ways do social and political groups use media in attempting to influence or even manipulate others’ thinking and behavior? How do socio-economic inequalities and political struggles that characterize media systems influence the way we perceive of the world? In this course, weekly seminars will consist of a combination of lectures and structured discussions of assigned readings.
Course Content: Media refer to technologies that allow and facilitate human communication. These technologies involve many types including print media, radio and television broadcasting, film, and the Internet. Once we conceive of politics as the ways in which human communities debate and decide upon the rules that govern society, it becomes apparent that media is inextricable from politics. After all, each political act necessitates some form of communicative activity through the medium of certain techniques and technologies.
