Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to teach the nursing knowledge and skills necessary to help individuals who have difficulty coping with emotional areas of illness, life crises affecting health or psychiatric disorders, and to develop the ability to understand and evaluate the characteristics of psychosocial responses to illness.
Course Content: The content of this course includes psychosocial nursing skills, psychosocial response to illness, psychosocial nursing assessment, nurses' reactions to difficult patient behaviors, crisis intervention, anger problems, working with anxious patients, confusion problems, etc.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Define concepts such as body image, self-esteem, powerlessness, loss, hopelessness in emotional response to illness.
2) Explain the defense mechanisms used by the patient in response to the disease and commonly used coping mechanisms.
3) Can make psychosocial nursing assessment of the patient.
4) Use therapeutic communication techniques and psychosocial skills such as patient acceptance, building trust, increasing self-esteem.
5) Plan psychosocial nursing interventions for patients with problems such as anxiety, confusion, pain or anger.
6) Evaluate the patient's crisis response and conduct a crisis interview.
